Children’s Oral Health: What Parents Should Know about the First Dental Visit

Children’s Dental Care in Livonia, MI

Dr. James Stewart supports the American Dental Association’s suggestion that children should visit the dentist by age one. Though your little one may not have many teeth at one year, he or she also has not yet been negatively influenced about dental visits. The first visit is called a Happy Visit because our primary goal is to make the child – and parent – happy with our office! In many cases, we have found that the best Happy Visit is conducted consecutively with a parent’s cleaning. Your child can take a ride in the dental chair, meet “Mr. Thirsty,” and become familiar with the sights, sounds, and friends at our office. Dr. Stewart will inspect your child’s mouth, looking for proper tooth development. Following the initial visit, be sure to schedule six-month checkups so that we can continue to build your child’s healthy future.

Preventive Children’s Dentistry
To keep young teeth cavity-free, Dr. Stewart often recommends dental sealants and fluoride supplements, in addition to twice-a-day brushing, once-a-day flossing, and rinsing the mouth with water after meals. Applied at a checkup, dental sealants are clear plastic coatings placed on hard-to-brush back teeth. Sealants form a barrier against starches, sugars, and food particles that cause cavities. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that, in small doses, attracts other minerals to strengthen tooth enamel against decay. Today, many families drink bottled water instead of tap water. Most communities in the USA add fluoride to the public water supply, but bottled water is not supplemented with fluoride. Your child may not get adequate fluoride in his or her diet, so a simple mouth rinse at the dentist’s office will do the trick. If you have questions about brushing, flossing, or other concerns, such as teeth grinding, please talk with Dr. Stewart at your child’s checkup. We gladly answer questions and look forward to becoming your helper in inspiring your child to take great care of his or her teeth.

When a cavity develops on a primary tooth, you might consider waiting for the tooth to naturally fall out. Why fill a tooth that isn’t permanent? Actually, repairing decay is important, even in baby teeth. Tooth decay can spread to surrounding teeth and even the un-erupted permanent tooth beneath. Furthermore, a deep cavity can cause internal infection in a tooth’s root. This can be painful and dangerous for your child. Dr. Stewart will comfortably repair your child’s cavity with a simple composite resin filling. Larger cavities, as well as fractures and chips, may require a crown. Our team loves children! We will take great care of your little one, providing compassionate care, while ensuring the best treatment. If your child would be better served with a pediatric dentist, a children’s dental specialist, Dr. Stewart will refer you to a trusted colleague.
